Sport Sailors Organize New “Give Where You Live” Summer Regatta To Help Ease Local Hard Times.
The Richmond Yacht Club membership recently voted to make a difference in their community this year by having a charity regatta this summer to benefit non-profit organizations in the city of Richmond. The Richmond Riviera Fund, a non-profit 501c3 was formed to hold the Richmond Riviera Regatta that will take place August 20st through 22nd, 2010. All proceeds from the regatta will benefit selected causes serving Richmond youth, the homeless, impoverished families and those with disabilities.
“We just want to help this community and give back to those who live here and are in need,” said Scott Gordon, the event organizer. “The Richmond Yacht Club has been a part of the local waterfront for 78 years, and we want to help out by building up these great organization that are already making a difference.
The organizers hope that the initial regatta will raise $50,000. And with success will continue as an annual event. Local Richmond Companies have stepped up to the challenge as sponsors. The Organizers encourage sponsors that wish to contribute and sailors that want to register for the regatta can do so by visiting the event website, http://www.richriv.com
The 4 Groups, all based in Richmond, that will benefit from the event include:
● Bay Area Rescue Mission: Provides emergency shelter, meals, recovery programs, spiritual counseling, education, job skills training, transitional services, youth intervention, food pantry, resource distribution, and mobile outreach in Richmond.
● YES – Youth Enrichment Strategies: Offers children and families access to experiences in nature – opportunities that can ignite the imagination, build self confidence and enhance social skills. Giving kids broader horizons gives them a larger sense of what is possible.
● Rubicon Programs: Empowering people living in poverty and people living with disabilities, so they feel capable of improving their quality of life. Employs over 200 people in a variety of training programs. and offers services throughout Contra Costa County and the San Francisco Bay Area.
● The Richmond Emergency Food Pantry: Volunteers donate more than 365 hours each month to distribute food to approximately 20,000 individuals annually. The majority of clients are low-income families with children.
Richmond is a hub in California’s transportation network with a major rail yard and California’s third largest port, behind only Long Beach and Los Angeles.
“Sadly, Richmond is known to most Bay Area residents more for its problems than its industry and successful history”, Scott Gordon said, “but we hope to change that, at least for two days on the Bay.”
